Onpage SEO Checklist - Tips for a Better SEO

Onpage SEO is one of the important pillars of search engine optimization (next to the off page optimization ).
Onpage means that you optimize the content on your website, and technology so that search engines can analyze the site and evaluate optimal.
More than that. You can by a variety of measures to bring its own content in Google and others further up and also increase the number of users who click on your own search result entries.
In this case here, it is only allowed to measures that Google also recommends itself or at least not prohibited.

Onpage SEO Checklist

The following list shows the most important "sites" for the onpage search engine optimization. The more you optimize them, the better the chances are to be listed in Google well.
Because even if external links are very important still, many neglect the onpage optimization and give away a lot of potential in this manner.
The following tips are of course subjective to some extent. But from my experience I have written this to the best of my knowledge and belief.
  1. Content
    • Important is the one that you write unique articles (Unique Content). Not simply write off somewhere else or even copy text.
    • Furthermore, one should be limited to 1 per item subject with 1 main keyword. The more focused an item is, the more relevant it is in Google's eyes to this issue.
    • One should not only write for search engines, but especially for people.
    • Watch out for easy readability and good spelling (need not be perfect).
    • A minimum length of 150-200 words is useful so that Google has to analyze anything at all. Towards the top, there are really no limits, even if you should consider that many users do not have the rest, forever to read long articles.
    • Regularly published content please both the reader and the search engines.
    Recommendation:
Unique and focused on one subject content is the best foundation.
  2. Keywords
    • Per item, one should focus on 1-2 main keywords.
    • The article text should use these keywords (and synonyms) several times. A keyword density of 3-4% is OK.
    • There are several keywords that describe the same thing? Then first in the Google AdWords Keyword Tool to check for what is often searched by the users.
    • One should always choose the keywords from the perspective of the user. After what looks for the target group?
    • The main keywords should be used in addition to the meta tags, the title, the image alt text, etc..
    Recommendation:
You should be limited to a few important keywords per article / page, but do not optimize it with the drive too far.
  3. Text Structure
    • H1-H6 use in order to structure the text with subheadings.
    • important keywords can be highlighted from time to time with or <b> <strong>.
    • Lists with <ul> or <ol> make it easier to read and highlight content.
    • The most important keywords should also appear as gentle as possible in the first paragraph.
    Recommendation:
A good text structure facilitates not only reading, but also provides for highlighting important text content and keywords.
  4. Duplicate Content
    • It will be argued about whether a Canonical tag is necessary. Google introduced this day is to define what is the primary URL of an article, as in WordPress and other software solutions to the same article can be called multiple URLs well.
    • I use the Canonical tag but not intervene and have been able to feel no ill effects.
    Recommendation:
With a newly launched blog, it will not hurt to use the Canonical tag. The plugin wpSEO * and other SEO plugins automatically generate this day.
  5. Meta Tags
    • The META tags are in the page header and are only visible to search engines etc..
    • The title tag is from an SEO point of view is very important and it will be displayed in the search results than large blue link in the search results (see screenshot). Thus he not only provides a better ranking, but also needs to be so attractive and interesting that He Google encourages users to click. the title tag should of course also be the main keywords in it. Of course, from an SEO reasons, but also because they are then marked in bold if someone searches on Google afterwards (see screenshot)
    • The meta description is today no longer as strong influence on the search engine optimization, but this is important. In the Google search results is also displayed and influences also the CTR. Again, of course the most important keywords should appear and the Description should arouse curiosity and stimulate the click.
    • The Meta keywords is no longer pure SEO technically relevant. I befülle him anyway, because he just goes with it. Moreover wpSEO automatically appended with me the keywords in the Title with. (Here you can find my current wpSEO settings .) My finished generated Title looks like this: "is encoder Title> Categories> Keywords" The keywords you can see it not as a rule in the search results pages, but SEO technically has this building positive affected.:-)

    Recommendation:
You should title, description and keywords for each article manually and install the most important keywords in all three. In addition, you should make different for each page Meta-data and do not use all the same. This is a mistake many beginners make. There is also talk of length not to overdo it and not enter eg 50 keywords.
  6. Pictures
    • Pictures should be used in general as it will improve the reading experience and also provide additional SEO opportunities.
    • The file name of the picture should contain the most important keywords.
    • The alt text should absolutely use and also there to pay a readable and concise description of the image with the most important keywords.
    • The Title text can be used, but probably not a great SEO impact.
    • But please make sure that it does not infringe any copyright in the pictures.
    Recommendation:
I like to shoot pictures and am taking the time to select the file name and the alt text matching.
  7. Internal linking
    • An internal linking is very important to connect related topics so each page to give more relevance.
    • Firstly, you should manually link from new products to matching old items.
    • One should also always provide old articles with links to recent matching articles.
    • A "similar items" plugin automatically linked X thematically appropriate items. I use the plugin for " Yet Another Related Posts Plugin "
    • In addition, you should just install the main navigation only and immediately visible.Flash games you should avoid.
    • A list of the categories in the sidebar as is also very useful, because each user has a different focus of interest and thus passes directly to relevant articles.
    • I did after a while, so-called Sneeze Pages introduced. I collect it on an issue best timeless products. In a blog with hundreds or even thousands items, it is usually difficult for new readers to find the "old beads". And from an SEO point of view such an additional link of course makes sense.
    • If you want an article puschen especially in Google, so you link to from several other thematically appropriate articles and also the home to this article.
    • One should not always (often the product-title) with the same anchor text link, but this can vary. So, for example, use the important keywords of the target article as link text.
    Recommendation:
You should link to the appropriate article and also make sure that not every reader uses the same blog. One uses the search function, a the categories and click on the featured products. Therefore, one should offer a variety of internal links.
  8. external link
    • Many do not dare to link to the outside. But this is nonsense.
    • Firstly, you should link to calm thematically appropriate articles in other blogs. The own readers appreciate it, if you offer more than just good content, but also links and then you come back willingly.
    • Google also looks good and like to link to blogs. Because the Internet is a two way street. And who gets not only thematically appropriate links, but it's also thematically appropriate links to the outside is doing something for the SEO.
    • One should not exaggerate only set (hundreds of external links on a page are quite negative on Google) and not as "making money" from reasons entirely paid links on-topic pages.
    Recommendation:
The Web thrives on the link and you should not save it. This link Greed is not only nonsense, but also counterproductive.

      • In WordPress you can place a link with a number, create a so-called permalink. These are "talking" links that contain keywords. This is both an advantage from SEO point of view, but also for the reader.
      • And in the Google search results URL is also displayed:
      Recommendation:
Speaking URLs should be the default, and then you have to also worry about anything else.
    1. Technology
      • The theme loading time is becoming increasingly important. So get with loads.in test or other tools, as long as your page loads.
      • Various measures can improve the loading time. Small image file sizes, less pictures, less database intensive plug-ins, page caching, etc.
In Blogprojekt.de there will soon be a great series for the load time optimization.
      • You should also make sure that the HTML - and CSS code does not contain too many errors.
      • Charging time-intensive JavaScript files should be loaded at the end of the page.
      • The new asynchronous Google Analytics code no longer slows the loading of a page.
      • You should also update their software (eg WordPress) regularly to make any security holes open. If you look at malware or similar traps, then this can have a negative impact on the ranking.
      Recommendation:
Even if you are using HTML and Co. not so familiar, you should ensure that their own websites quickly and as accurate as possible.
    2. Webspace / server
      • Who saves the web space which saves in the wrong place. You can start small and safe for a few euros per month to host his website or his blog. But if the visitor numbers rise and the pages load slowly or even every now and then can not be reached, you should go to a better web space. For me, the change has brought on a server overnight approximately 10% more visitors and long term laid the foundation for further growth.
      • One should at the option of the provider ensure that the largest possible free and automatic transfer is possible in higher tariffs. So you have no stress later and the inaccessibility to the site during the move is relatively small.
      • Some also choose from the foreign webspace. Often increased by the fact, however, the server response time and hence the load times.
      Recommendation:
The first web space need not be expensive, but you should pay attention to a few things and then later move to higher rates when increasing the number of visitors.
    3. Usability
      • Google wants its users with the best possible user experience. This also means that, for example, the bounce rate is a ranking factor. Thus, users are meant to leave immediately to your blog / website, because the first impression is not good, the beating of them annoying ads or in some other way, the usability is poor.
      • Therefore, the usability of your pages and will also affect the ranking in Google.
      • More about usability comes here on the blog later in an article.
      Recommendation:
Who is making sure that the positive experience of users on their own pages, for example, gets more back links, tweets and longer residence times. All of this also helps in SEO perspective.
    4. Domain
      • The domain is no longer as important as it was many years ago. Back then ranked only for the keywords contained in the domain very well.
      • Nevertheless, I still choose my domains in such a way that there exist important keywords as possible. It helps stop but a little.
      • Moreover, if the domain is easy to read and the reader should be able to remember and spell well.
      • more than 1-2 keywords but you should not put it in the domain, as it then again spammig looks.
      • If you get an older (right) domain can that has many back links on the web and shows by example, a good PageRank that they did not get a penalty from Google may, in his new blog thus provide a good advantage.
      • In hindsight I would not change the domain is no longer possible. While you can set up redirects, but some link power one loses all the time. Moreover, the benefit of an established Blog-Name/Domain at regular readers is then gone.
      Recommendation:
It should be good before the election domain to think and think about the future. So not too broad nor too narrow choose the blog name. Finally, we changed as a blogger with time and goes to new topics and can be omitted old.
    5. other
      • It helps if you create an XML sitemap that includes all sides. Thus, for example, the Google crawler will find all pages of your website / blog. For WordPress, there is the nice plugin " Google XML Sitemaps "
      • Technical nonsense, such as frames, you should of course use any more.
      • The social web is also becoming increasingly important for search engine optimization.social buttons (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) can bring some reason. But even here, one should not overdo it.
      • Please no age-old tricks like some white text on a white background. It worked 10 years ago, today there are penalties for that.
      • I generally advise against "Black Hat" SEO tips to use. This function usually only for a certain time. Those who want to have long term success, should also abide by the rules of Google and others.
      • Conclusion onpage SEO

There are a lot of small pieces of the puzzle to which to look for in the onpage optimization. One of them is unlikely to make major change in Google ranking. If, however, as many of them optimized, then it certainly brings positive SEO effects.

        Dispute "keyword density"

Another word for "keyword density". Thus, the ratio of specific main keywords to the total word count is meant.
Is eg the "Keyword A" 10 times before in a text with a total of 200 words, then it is a keyword density of 5% for that keyword.
Previously, it has brought a lot, just use the keyword that you want to rank for, as often as possible. However, this has meant that many have veritable "keyword stuffing" operated. The lyrics were barely readable for users.
That's why Google has reduced the importance of Keyword Density. But that does not mean it is unimportant.
You should incorporate important keywords several times in the text. I think 3-4% a good benchmark, but now is not analyzed any of my articles on it. It's more of a gut feeling, and I pay attention now simply unaware that I the most important keywords in the text more than once again used.
One should not exaggerate, but it may just not be the same for one of the articles of a blog coaching subscriber who uses the main keyword once in the title, but not at all in the text.
